Using What You Already Have to Save Money on Packing

Using What You Already Have to Save Money on Packing

There's no doubt about it — moving can be expensive. Between the down payment or security deposit for your new home, hiring professional movers, and purchasing packing materials, the costs can add up quickly. Luckily, many of the items you already have in your home can be used to help you pack, saving you time and money. Here's how to use your stuff most efficiently.

Luggage, Trash Cans and More

If you're like most people, you probably have a collection of luggage, including suitcases, duffel bags, and backpacks. Rather than filling boxes with these items, fill them up with your other belongings. Suitcases with wheels are great for transporting heavier items, while backpacks are ideal for smaller things, especially if your backpack has multiple compartments or pockets. Give your trash cans a quick wash, then use them to move cleaning supplies. Decorative baskets can be used to transport knick-knacks and other small items.

Clothes, Towels, and Linens

Clothing, towels, and blankets are great for protecting fragile items, like dishes, small electronics, and decorative items. Start with a thick sweater or blanket at the bottom of the box for added cushioning, then wrap each item individually in t-shirts or pillowcases. Stuff socks inside cups and glasses, and use scarves to wrap stemware. This will keep your breakable items protected while allowing you to pack your clothes at the same time. Sheets and towels can also be used to wrap TVs, computer monitors, and other large items to protect them from scratches and other damage.

Magazines, Newspapers and Junk Mail

If you know you will be moving soon, start stockpiling paper goods. You can then crumple up the pages to use as filler in your boxes to keep items from shifting in transit. Keep in mind that some of the ink may transfer to your belongings, so be prepared to wash everything once you unpack. And don't forget to recycle everything when you are done with it.

Sandwich Bags

Sandwich bags with zip closures are perfect for packing screws, bolts, and other hardware when you take apart your furniture. Be sure to label everything carefully so that you don't have to guess where each screw goes when it comes time to reassemble your furnishings. You can use these bags to pack jewelry individually so that the chains don't get tangled as well.
